AIDS Orphans

Over 15 million children worldwide have lost one or both parents to AIDS – equivalent to the number of people living in New York, Paris, and Bangkok combined. In sub-Saharan Africa alone, over 12 million children have been orphaned by the pandemic.

Today, May 7th, is World AIDS Orphans Day, a grassroots campaign to draw attention to and advocate on behalf of the over 15 million children orphaned by AIDS. (more…)

What’s at Steak?

I recall reading that if you care about the environment, you had better be a vegetarian. Why? Because meat consumption is one of the primary causes of environmental devastation, including the misuse of natural resources, the polluting of water and air and the destruction of rain forests.

I have been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for nearly eight years, and never once had I considered myself an environmentalist because of it. That is until I began researching the benefits of a vegetarian diet - not only for myself, but also for the environment.

With environmental concerns like climate change on everyone’s mind lately, people may not realize that if they want to do something to help our planet, they can simply try not to eat meat.

Contaminated water kills a child every 15 seconds, says World Vision. In addition, over 60 percent of Africans lack access to a proper toilet, according to a report released just days before World Water Day by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation.

But there is something you and I can do.

FreePoverty.com allows everyone to contribute in donating water to people from all over the world who live in extreme poverty. By letting users locate places on the map, their accuracy will determine how many cups of water will be donated on their behalf.

You can also donate a proper amount to World Vision which will help bring life-giving water to children around the world today. Any amount you send will be doubled to bring fresh water to communities where children are suffering from deadly waterborne diseases such as typhoid, cholera, and dysentery. The organization earned a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, which means they are both fiscally responsible and true to their mission.
